Plain English Summary

Have you ever had a dream so vivid it felt realer than real life? That's what near-death experiences (NDEs) seem to be like -- and the more intense the experience, the more stunningly vivid the memories. Researchers surveyed 152 people who'd had NDEs and found that stronger experiences produced richer, more detailed memories packed with sensory detail and deep personal significance. Here's the remarkable part: these memories didn't fade over time. Even after an average of 23 years, they stayed rock-solid. That's a striking finding, since these experiences happen during states of severely altered consciousness when you'd expect the brain to be terrible at forming memories.

Research Notes

Key empirical paper linking NDE intensity to memory richness. Supports Thonnard et al. (2013) findings that NDE memories are 'hyper-real.' Important for understanding why NDEs remain vivid despite occurring during altered consciousness. Cited by timmermann_2018_dmt_nde. First author Charlotte Martial has published multiple NDE studies with Liège group.

Examined whether NDE intensity correlates with phenomenological memory characteristics in 152 individuals with classical NDEs (Greyson scale ≥7/32). Participants completed the Greyson NDE scale and Memory Characteristics Questionnaire (MCQ). Greyson total score positively correlated with MCQ total score (r=0.29, p<0.0005), indicating more intense NDEs have richer memory phenomenology. Specific associations found for sensory details, personal importance, and reactivation frequency. No associations with time since NDE, suggesting memory characteristics remain stable over time (mean 23 years).
